Periodontal disease is the inflammation of the supportive tissue of the tooth, caused by accumulation of dental plaque and tartar. This is a significant problem in adults since periodontal disease is the main cause of teeth loss.

The first signs are often inflamed and bleeding gums during brushing. At this point, the gums are red, swollen and sensitive and is more commonly called gingivitis. When gingivitis is left untreated, the infection can reach the bone that supports the teeth and gradually, the bone deteriorates. Your teeth will become mobile and bare. Without treatment, the loss of teeth will be inevitable.

At the initial stage, treatment consists of a deep cleaning under local anesthesia for root planning and gum scaling. However, at a more advanced stage, surgical treatment may be necessary and the dentist can refer you to a periodontist (a specialist in the treatment of periodontal diseases).
